Hands-on approach to textile tools: documentation, functionality and use-wear. Textile tools from Bronze Age Malia, Crete, as a case study

EuroWeb, in collaboration with the Ecole française d’Athènes, the University of Florence and the INSTAP SCEC, is organising a one-week training school on hands-on approach to textile tools. The objective of the course is to familiarise trainees with the textile technology and, specifically, with the functionality of textile tools. The abundant archaeological evidence for textile production from the Bronze Age site of Malia on Crete is our case study. The training school offers short introductory lectures, hands-on learning, and experimental/experiential activities. The trainees will study and recreate Minoan textile tools, and will learn to spin and weave using them and how to document them.

International Conference Textiles and War in Europe and the Mediterranean from Prehistory to Late Antiquity

Bucharest, 17 – 19 May 2023

“War is the father of all things”, proclaimed Heraclitus of Ephesus in the late 6th century BC.

The main aim of this conference is to explore how appropriate this sentence is in the field of prehistoric and ancient textiles. While no definite answer should be expected in such a new interdisciplinary branch of study, the examination of a few key questions could lead us to a better general approximation of the influence that war had on the production, acquisition and consumption of textiles throughout millennia: what effects had the military needs on the social and economic systems of production and acquisition of textiles items? Did military developments trigger technical innovation in the field of textiles production? Did wars and conquests change textiles consumption habits?

While the answers to these questions should shed a new light on the history and archaeology of textiles in Europe and the Mediterranean, they will also contribute to one of the most neglected aspects of military logistics and technology in the prehistoric and ancient studies, which still lags behind the study of foodstuffs, metal items and payment in the military field.

Thus, we hope to bring together scholars with expertise on textiles, as well as on war and warfare in order to deepen the understanding on both fields through a joint endeavor.

We encourage the submission of abstracts of no more than 300 words, by the 31st of December 2022, at textilesandwar@gmail.com, on the following indicative topics:

– From sails and ropes to tents and metal armor linings: written and unwritten evidence for textile items used by the military;

– Taxes, tributes, contracts or specialized workers? Systems of production and acquisition of garments and other textile items for the armies;

– Elite cloaks and standard uniforms: the military rank and status expressed through textile items;

– Economic and cultural effects of military campaigns in the field of textile acquisition and consumption.

EuroWeb is habby to announce the upcoming Workshop “Theoretical concepts on dress and identity, visual codes in prehistoric and historic societies”. The workshop, organized in the framework of Working Group 2 and hosted by the Natural History Museum Vienna under the coordination of Karina Grömer (Natural History Museum Vienna), Kayleigh Saunderson (University of Vienna), and Elisabeth Trinkl (University of Graz), will take place between the 25th and the 27th of April 2022.

What is a “visual code”?

How do textiles contribute to identity?

In which contexts can we observe these processes?

Visual codes, which vary with and within different societies, comprise aspects of the external appearance of people that are communicated non-verbally. This includes clothing (also shoes and headgear) as well as hairstyles and various accessories.

Are there rules within a specific society that prescribe or even prohibit certain items of clothing, colours, raw materials (e.g., fur, silk), costume components, accessories for certain social groups, for men and women or for certain age groups?

In this workshop, we will work on theoretical concepts: different perspectives — such as cultural anthropology, material culture studies, social psychology, evolutionary anthropology and modern fashion studies. The discussions include theories on visual coding, body language, fashion theory, gender & age and social hierarchies. The
participants will:

– Receive a reader with 5 selected articles, with which we will discuss the theories;

– Present short statements with case studies from their own research;

– Set the case studies into a context with the theoretical approaches and form ideas on how to include theories in their own work.

For more information on the program, the readings and how to register, check the full call here:

Workshop Call: Theoretical concepts on dress and identity, visual codes in prehistoric and historic societies

This online workshop, supported by the Action and co-organized by members Catarina Costeira, Joana Sequeira, Paula Nabais, Maria João Melo, and Francisco B. Gomes, gathered a large group of Portuguese EuroWeb members, as well as other national researchers whose work focuses on textiles and textile activities, from production to usage, crossing different disciplinary and methodological outlooks. The goal of this meeting was not only to propitiate dialogue and collaboration among the participants, but also to map the working current taking place and the skill sets available within the Portuguese team. It was also aimed at identifying existing gaps regarding know-how and resources which can be bridged by making a good use of the opportunities offered by EuroWeb.

A total of 47 speakers took part in this meeting, hailing from different disciplinary fields, from Archaeology and History to Conservation Sciences, and also including Anthropology, Ethnobotanics and Art History. These included the keynote speakers, Marie Louise Nosch, Karina Grömer, Zvi Koren, Eva Andersson Strand, Agata Ulanowska, and the team of the Digital Atlas of European Textile Heritage (Angela Huang, Catarina Costeira, Alina Iancu, Mikkel Nørtoft e Piotr Kasprzyk).

The interventions, 23 in total, were organized in three panels: Panel 1 focused on archaeological data and their interpretation; Panel 2 dealt mostly with the study of natural dyes in textile production; and finally, Panel 3 explored the role of textiles, textile production and costume in the Medieval and Modern Periods.

Thanks to the commitment of all the speakers, the results of this meeting were very positive. It was in fact possible to form a clearer picture both of those fields in which the Portuguese team can contribute to the global goals of the Action – with archaeological and anthropological data, innovative methods for the study of natural dyes, and an extensive know-how on the interpretation of different sources for the study of medieval and early modern textiles – but also to map the areas which are worth further exploration and a renewed strategic investment in the framework of EuroWeb.
