Concluding Conference for COST Action “EuroWeb – Europe through Textiles” (CA19131) 

Call for Papers 

It is our pleasure to announce the Call for Papers for the EuroWeb concluding conference titled “After EuroWeb: Expanding Horizons in Textile Studies and European Networking”, which will be held at the University of Warsaw, Poland, from 20th to 21st May 2024. 

This gathering will serve as a moment of reflection, celebration, and anticipation for the future. Beyond summarising EuroWeb’s achievements and acknowledging the commitments outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding, as well as our failures, we are particularly keen to explore if and how EuroWeb has reshaped textile studies across Europe. 

We especially welcome you to share your observations on whether EuroWeb has paved the way for new areas of textile research. Have we collectively identified uncharted territories, innovative methodologies, or interdisciplinary approaches that may reshaped the fabric of textile studies? We look to hear your reflections on whether EuroWeb has succeeded in bridging gaps between academia, craftspeople, industry, and stakeholders. What lessons can we draw from these interactions for future collaborations? Share your perspectives on whether EuroWeb has played a role in shaping a new vision for textiles. Have our collaborative efforts led to a reimagining of the role of textiles in society, culture, and industry? How can we build on the foundations laid by EuroWeb to foster ongoing collaboration, knowledge exchange, and community building in the realm of textile studies? 

The conference will comprise a regular session with maximum 28 oral presentations and a table ronde open to all conference participants and the present EuroWeb members. The conference will be followed by the Management Committee Meeting on 21st May 2024 (16:30–18:10 CET). 

Proposals for 20-minute oral presentations should include an abstract in English, with a maximum length of 300 words, as well as the presenter’s personal details (title/degree, name, affiliation, email address, and, if available, ORCID ID number).

AIMS OF THE WORKSHOP

This training school is open for all the EuroWeb members that wish to learn more about the stage of the development of the EuroWeb Digital Atlas OF European Textile Heritage and to contribute with textile data. The trainers will offer an overview of the recent progress made by the Digital Atlas team and will give insights into the EuroWeb Digital Atlas as a dissemination tool.

By participating ininto this WorkShop you find out:

● the current structure of the Digital Atlas
● the ways in which EuroWeb members can contribute with their own data
● which type of data fits in the Atlas at this stage of the project
● what sources should be used in the Atlas
● the basic steps of data processing: how to select, organize, clean, translate, and import textile resources in the Atlas
● basic citing rules and how to correctly use image in the Atlas
● how to correlate sites, institutions and textile resources into the Atlas
● how to promote the Digital Atlas and disseminate news about this database to your own network

At the end of this workshop participants will receive concrete information about how they can be involved in the EuroWeb Atlas development.

DAY 1 (9th of May)

PART 1: The EuroWeb Digital Atlas: recent updates.

Aim: Introductory section giving an up-to-date on the last changes made in the database since the last workshop:

• current structure of the Atlas (description of sections and what information was already included)
• the controlled vocabularies implemented in the Digital Atlas, with a focus on the cleaning of the deprecated terms

PART 2. Organizing the data import into the DA: how to select, organize, clean, translate, cite  and import textile resources in the EuroWeb Digital Atlas

Part 3: Practical demonstration on importing textile data in the Atlas, and a good moment to spread the DA working procedure to all participants. 

All participants will be shown 1. how to obtain a predefinite excel table from the DA excel import system, 2. how to complete it and 3. how to import this data into the Atlas.

EuroWeb members that have textile data and would like to import it into the Atlas can ask for more detailed individual training sessions after this workshop ends. These individual training sessions can be organized in the future weeks/months together with the Digital Atlas team members on a mutually agreed programme.

Digital data is both a challenge and an opportunity for researchers these days. Whether or not ECIs want to use digital methods, it is by now important to be aware of the tools and methods available; the aim of this Training School was therefore to introduce PhD students and Early Career Scholars to work with digital tools and databases.

With this goal in mind, the event included a first day focused on discussions and reflections on the EuroWeb Digital Atlas as a deliverable of the COST Action designed to disseminate the network’s work and to raise awareness for Textile Heritage and research.

The following two days of the Training School were dedicated to practical training. On the one hand, Julie Unruh introduced participants into basic techniques to ensure data quality and normalization using OpenRefine; on the other, Pim van Bree offered a comprehensive introductory training on how to design your own research environment/ database using nodegoat.

Both sections of the Training School focused on working digitally with quantitative or serial data, but also touched on the display of data, e.g. using GIS/ digital cartography. This resulted in interesting discussions on the potential of digital tools for collaborative research through data collection and shared storage environments. Participants were also encouraged to bring their own data sets in order to experiment with creating and structuring their own databases and apply what they learned in the Training School to their own research.

The first official presentation of the Atlas took place on the 17^th of April in the framework of the “(In)aesthetic – contours, forms, and colours from Prehistory to the Middle Ages” Conference, in Bucharest, in which Alina Iancu (RO) and Catarina Costeira (PT), in representation of the Digital Atlas team, presented a conference with the title “The Digital Atlas of Textile and Dress. The Digitization and dissemination of the European Textile Resources”.

Another conference took place later on, on the 29^th of June, as part of Europeana’s Digital Spring Programme. The team, represented again by Alina Iancu and Catarina Costeira, gave a talk on “The Digital Atlas of European Costume and Dress”, which can still be watched on Europeana’s website.

These conferences represent an important step to disseminate EuroWeb’s goals and to establish bridges with other researchers working on textile research and on the digitization of Cultural Heritage.
